The short answer, with the clock running

Yes, partly, and more generously than most people assume. Every open series in the library gives away at least its first two episodes at a price of zero tokens, and one gives away three. Added up across the library, that free shelf ran 261 minutes on September 24, 2026, or 4.3 hours of finished episodes. That is not a teaser clip or a trailer cut. It is the actual opening of each story, at the length the writers made it.

What it is not is the whole story. Episode three is locked on every series, and the lock takes tokens that come with Premium. Free here means free to watch the opening, on a free account, as many times as you like.

The account question

Candy’s player is built for signed-in viewers. Open a series as a guest and the page still loads its episode list and the free pair, but the player carries a card that reads “Sign up free to keep watching,” and the rest of the app asks for an account at every turn. A free account costs an email address and an age confirmation. Make one before you start sampling: it saves the interruptions, and it is also what unblurs the login-only shelf.

How I timed 226 free episodes

Scrubbing a player bar is a fine way to get a rough number and a poor way to get a right one, so I went to the files instead. Every free episode on Candy is an MP4, and every MP4 opens with a movie header that records a timescale and a duration. Divide one by the other and you have the running time to a hundredth of a second, straight from the encoder. I read the first half megabyte of each file, pulled that header, and did the division 226 times.

The spread is tighter than you might guess. The shortest free episode in the library runs 45 seconds and the longest runs 118. 43 come in under a minute, 167 fall between one minute and ninety seconds, and only 16 go past ninety. The average is 69 seconds. Candy is cutting to a format, and the format is about seventy seconds long.

Where the free minutes pile up

Because nearly every series gives away exactly two episodes, a free run is really a measure of how long those first two episodes are. Here is the top of the list among the series I cover:

Stepmom Summer Fling is the outlier by a distance. Its first episode is the longest free episode in the library at 118 seconds and its second is the runner-up, so together they hand you nearly four minutes of a boardwalk summer before a single token changes hands. Two creator series sit near the top as well, Under Her Watch and Private Lessons. That is worth knowing, because the creator shelf charges the most once its free pair ends, and a longer free pair gives you more to judge before paying the higher price.

The short end of the shelf

At the other end, My Best Friend’s Mom Has One Rule gives you 1:38 in total, and its first episode is the shortest free episode in the library at 45 seconds. It gets the premise across, a housesitter, a mother in a towel and one rule about one bedroom, and not much else. Room Service and Cleopatra and Caesar sit just above it at 1:50 and 1:51. Short is not the same as bad; Room Service lands its entire joke about a twenty-minute shower inside the free pair. But a short free run gives you less to decide on.

By Candy’s tags the differences are small. Wife-tagged series average the longest free runs at about two and a half minutes, fantasy titles the shortest at a little over two, and everything else clusters in between. Genre tells you very little about how much you get for free; the individual series tells you everything.

Free time is not the same as story time

Minutes on the clock tell you how long you watch, not how much happens. The subtitle tracks show the difference. Y.U.N.A runs 2:48 free and speaks 62 words across both episodes, with most of its screen time spent on an android housekeeper calibrating in silence. Under the Boss runs a hair shorter at 2:56 and crams 476 words into the same span, most of them an office temp’s panicked inner monologue.

Kiss My Enemy is the quietest long run of all: ten cues in episode one, and the episode opens and closes on the same sentence, “Tonight, I’m getting paid to end your career,” first as a threat and then as an order. If you want value per minute of attention rather than per minute of screen, the Cues column on the log is a better guide than the clock alone.

Cold opens and silent tails

Subtitle files carry timestamps as well as words, and the timestamps say a lot about how these episodes are cut. Across the episode ones I read, the first line of dialogue lands at a median of 1.1 seconds. Ninety-four of the 111 start talking within five seconds, and only five make you wait more than ten. That is a cold open in the television sense: no titles, no establishing shot, straight into the premise. The patient exceptions include YES MA’AM, which lets the base breathe for ten seconds before “Day one of basic,” and Talia Undercover, which spends eleven seconds on an office lobby before anyone speaks.

The endings are just as tight. The median gap between the last caption and the end of the file is 1.3 seconds, so most episodes cut out on a line rather than on a lingering shot. Newlywed Not Satisfied holds the longest silent tail at almost thirteen seconds, and Claimed by the Dragon Queen gives its closing image nine.

The same timestamps let you measure how much of an episode is spoken. Median coverage is 48 percent of the running time. At the quiet extreme, Dad’s New Girlfriend has captions on screen for 8 percent of its first episode and Kiss My Enemy for 16. At the talkative end, The Nun in Our Guest Room and Under the Boss are captioned for more than two thirds of theirs. If you watch with the sound off, which plenty of people do with these, the high-coverage series lose far less.

Is the free pair the same on every shelf?

In length, no; in rules, yes. The in-house productions, the Other shelf and the creator shelf all give away the first two episodes at zero tokens. What changes is the price of episode three: 12 tokens on the first two shelves and 30 on the creator shelf. The average free run, oddly, barely moves from shelf to shelf. In-house series average 139 seconds, the Other shelf 137, the creator shelf 138, so the higher price does not buy a longer opening on average, even if two creator series sit near the top of the table. The login-only shelf is the exception to all of this. Guests see blurred covers and no episode list, so none of those titles are in my free totals, and I would rather leave a gap than guess at a number.

What free does not include

• Unlimited chat with the stars. Each episode ends with a door into the lead’s chat profile, and that side of Candy has its own limits on a free account.

The re-upload trap

Search for free Candy Shorts and you will find sites offering whole series. Skip them. What turns up there is usually a screen recording, cropped out of the vertical frame, re-encoded into mush, and stripped of the subtitle tracks, which on these series carry half the story. It also cuts the one thing that makes the format work, the chat with the star after the episode. Candy’s terms give viewers a personal license to watch, not to redistribute, so those copies are unauthorized by definition, and sites built on unauthorized video tend to pay their bills with pop-ups and worse. The free pair on Candy is the legitimate free option, and it is a generous one.

A free evening, planned by an editor

If I had one free evening and no intention of paying, here is how I would spend it. Start with the longest free runs, because they give the most story per tap. Move on to the talkiest pairs, because dialogue carries these series. Then sample one creator series and, once signed in, one login-only title, to see whether the premium shelves are for you at all. Stop at the end of any free pair that does not make you want episode three. That is precisely what the free pair is for, and it is a better trailer than most streaming services bother to give you.
